Juan Castillo inaugura Ritos de Paso en la Galería D21

© Juan Castillo.

Chemical Brothers 'Velodrome' - London 2012 from Crystal CG on Vimeo.

Crystal has created a three minute animated sequence for the song’s promotional video to match its heart-pounding rhythms. Played in the Velodrome before every session the video shows the Velodrome as never before, literally pulsating with excitement.

“We’ve created sweeping contours and sleek surfaces as the backdrop for an intense, futuristic cycling ‘duel’ as two animated riders power round the track,” said Darren Groucutt, creative director at Crystal. “It truly brings the Velodrome to life.”

James O’Brien, LOCOG Head of Sports Presentation, said: ‘Inspiring people to engage with sport has always been central to our vision and we want to ensure the way we present sport adds to the experience of the spectators in the venues and builds the atmosphere. This will be a special summer and we are grateful to everyone who has given their time and expertise over the past years.’

Artistas: Juan Castillo

Exhibición: Inauguración jueves 16 de agosto, 2012

Lugar: MSSA

Ai Weiwei – Interlacing, Jeu de Paume from 21 February 2012 until 29 April 2012

Étude de perspective – Tiananmen

Vía Jeu de Paume.

"Ai Weiwei – Interlacing" is the first major exhibition of photographs and videos by Ai Weiwei. It foregrounds Ai Weiwei the communicator – the documenting, analyzing, interweaving artist who communicates via many channels. Ai Weiwei already used photography in his New York years, but especially since his return to Beijing, he has incessantly documented the everyday urban and social realities in China, discussing it over blogs and Twitter. Photographs of radical urban transformation, of the search for earthquake victims, and the destruction of his Shanghai studio are presented together with his art photography projects, the Documenta project Fairytale, the countless blog and cell phone photographs. A comprehensive book accompanies this exhibition.

Ai Weiwei is a generalist, a conceptual, socially critical artist dedicated to creating friction with, and forming reality. As an architect, conceptual artist, sculptor, photographer, blogger, Twitterer, interview artist, and cultural critic, he is a sensitive observer of current topics and social problems: a great communicator and networker who brings life into art and art into life.

Ai Weiwei deliberately confronts social conditions in China and in the world: Through photographically documenting the architectonic clear-cutting of Beijing in the name of progress, with provocative measurements of the world, his personal positionings in the Study of Perspective, with radical cuts in the past (made to found pieces of furniture) in order to create possibilities for the present and the future, and with his tens of thousands of blog entries, blog photographs, and cell phone photographs (along with many other artistic declarations). This first, large exhibition and book project of his photography and videos focuses on Ai Weiwei’s diversity, complexity, and connectedness, his “interlacing” and “networking” with hundreds of photographs, blogs, and explanatory essays.

Imprisoned on April 3rd 2011 by the Chinese authorities because of his political activities, released on bail June 22nd 2011, Ai Weiwei is still, today, banned from leaving the country.

Plan of the city, a film by Joshua Frankel

PLAN OF THE CITY from Joshua Frankel on Vimeo.

A new film combing animation with live action conceived and directed by Joshua Frankel, about the architecture of New York City blasting off into outer space and resettling on Mars. The film’s visuals are an animated collage combining live action footage, animated elements, illustrations and treated photographs, including photos taken by the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity made available to the public domain by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Plan of the City was created in collaboration with composer Judd Greenstein and NOW Ensemble, an acclaimed "indie classical" chamber ensemble; the ensemble, including Greenstein, feature prominently in the film as live actors set inside the animated framework.

The audio of the film consists solely of Greenstein's Change, performed by NOW Ensemble; Change and Plan of the City were created in parallel, each expressing its own artistic intention while simultaneously serving its "sibling".

The film was presented with the music performed live, timed to the film, at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City in May, 2011. It also exists as its own stand-alone entity, utilizing NOW Ensemble's recent studio recording of Change(out on New Amsterdam Records).

VideoBrasil reúne Karim Aïnouz e Olafur Eliasson

Vía VideoBrasil

08.06.11

Olafur Eliasson shows your body of work in São Paulo

From September 30, São Paulo will be hosting Your body of work, the first Olafur Eliasson solo exhibition in South America. Conceived by the Danish/Icelandic artist especially for, and in response to, the Brazilian city, the exhibition features ten site-specific installations that invite the public to experience the perception of colour, spatial orientation and other forms of engagement with reality. The exhibition is part of the program for the 17th SESC_VIDEOBRASIL International Contemporary Art Festival, under the general curatorship of Solange Farkas.

Through to January 2012, Eliasson's work will fill three venues in São Paulo: the SESC cultural centers in Pompeia and Belenzinho, in the west and east of the city, and the Pinacoteca do Estado, a hundred year old state-run museum downtown. "The exhibition proposes a grid of experiences based on a temporary geography for São Paulo, creating a series of narratives that converge in the viewer's experience", says Jochen Volz, the artistic director of the Inhotim Institute in Minas Gerais and curator of Your body of work.

According to the artist, the title Your body of work touches upon the vital role of the viewer in creating the meanings of the work, at the same time as it underscores the wide-ranging character of the content. "You work your whole life, and everything you do and learn is etched into your body. You are a viewer/producer of history itself, seen as you contribute, or give, more than you receive," explains Eliasson.

Vibrant City

Olafur Eliasson is known for interventions that draw the interest of a wider public beyond the circuits of contemporary art, such as his New York City Waterfalls (2008) in Manhattan, New York. He has experimented with propositions that imply increasingly more direct contact with their urban settings. The starting point for the conception of the Brazilian exhibition was the artist's impressions and curiosities about the different spaces he saw in São Paulo.

"São Paulo is vibrant, it has a very strong physical presence", says Eliasson. "Though the private sphere remains inaccessible, everything you think and do is perceivable in the streets. In other cities, the public spaces tend to separate very clearly from daily life." In consonance with the artist's sensations, the project is drafted as an experience of the city, in dialogue with the architecture of the spaces it occupies.

Three venues

At SESC Pompeia, a former drum factory transformed into a cultural center in the 1980s, Eliasson's conceptions are met with the generous spaces the Italo-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi designed for the fruition of the local population. The exhibition, which is spread throughout internal and external areas, was devised to dialogue with the various uses of the venue as a spot for reflection, learning, leisure and entertainment.

A set of works involving colour, light and smoke transforms this 1,500 meter-squared center into a labyrinth of sensorial experiences. In the contiguous exhibition area, configured as a cinema theater, Eliasson plays with the concept of the after image—the counter-image that lingers on the retina when exposed to light—and scenes of São Paulo taken by the Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz.

At the recently inaugurated SESC Belenzinho, which caters to a region of the city far less privileged in terms of leisure and cultural equipment, the artist shows a rotating device that projects light stripes onto the surrounding space. At the Pinacoteca, the work focuses on experiments with one of art's most classic tools—the mirror¬—to dialogue with the building's architecture, originally classical but reworked a decade ago by the award-winning architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

SESC_Videobrasil Festival

The Eliasson exhibition will result in a book edited by the artist himself, scheduled for publication through SESC Editions in November. In addition to a photo record of all the works installed and photographic series produced by Eliasson during his field work in São Paulo, the book will also feature essays by Brazilian theorists, establishing relations between different aspects of his work and local production in such fields as art, science and architecture.

The Eliasson exhibition underlines Videobrasil's transformation into the only contemporary art festival of its kind in Brazil. In addition to Your body of work, the Festival includes a competitive show dedicated to the production of artists from Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, creating an unprecedented forum in São Paulo for the observation of, and reflection on, contemporary artistic output in the geopolitical south.

The 17th SESC_Videobrasil International Contemporary Art Festival is a SESC (www.sescsp.org.br) and Associação Cultural Videobrasil (www.videobrasil.org.br) production.
